Progressive Muscle Relaxation CD

Progressive muscle relaxation is an excellent technique for relaxing the body and mind.  It is useful, when practiced on a daily basis, in the management of stress and difficult emotions such as anger and anxiety.  Daily practice of the CD allows the brain to wire new pathways to help the body relax when it senses tension.

What the CD is helping to achieve is as follows:

  • It gives you about 15 minutes to relax
  • It teaches you to relax certain muscles when they tense up
  • It helps you to develop better concentration by focusing on the voice on the CD regularly.
  • It will help to reinforce your desire to feel good more of the time
  • It helps the brain waves to slow down to Alpha and to release calming hormones call endorphins


  • Make sure the phone is off the hook and that you have told others in your house that you are not to be disturbed.
  • Do not play the CD for at least an hour after eating.
  • Do not lie down.  Sit or recline instead.  Otherwise you may fall asleep.
  • If you lose concentration, just allow your mind to focus back on the voice.
  • When you have finished, do not evaluate your experience.  Each experience, especially the first few times, will be different.  As long as you play your CD you will be doing your bit.
  • Never use the CD to bring you out of a panic attack or a very high level.  It should never be “tested”.  It is simply a skill that you need to develop, to relax and to let go and to lower your arousal levels.  Otherwise you may be disappointed.
  • It is best to play the CD before you are tired and ready for bed.  If you play it late in the evening, you may fall asleep.  It is important that you be awake to get the full benefits of the relaxation.
  • You may play the CD more than once a day – thereby increasing the relaxing effect of the release of calming hormones.
  • The CD has both track #1 and #2 on it.   There is a 6 minute interval between tracks to give you some time to relax after the first track is completed, after which the next track will begin.
  • Play track #1 only on a daily basis for the first two weeks then play track #2 only for the next two weeks.  Thereafter you can play either track as you please.


Positive Visualisation CD

Most of us spend up to 90% of our time either ruminating about the past or worrying about the future.  However, because the brain does not know the difference between reality and imagination it thinks that what we are thinking is real and is happening now.  The past and the future are mental constructs but constant negative anticipation can cause us to have stress hormone secretions which can cause anxiety and avoidance. Similarly, negatively scanning our past and only looking at our mistakes and regrets can lead to depression.

Positive Mental Rehearsal has been used for many years in sports psychology, preparing for a successful outcome.  Visualisation is now being used in many other areas such as psychology and medicine and for business success.  Drawing on the fact that the brain does not know the difference between reality and imagination, we can use positive visualisation to help build new neural pathways and with practice, convince the brain that we are confident, competent and successful in many areas of our lives.  In effect, this is the opposite of what we have been doing by habitually negatively rehearsing for events.

The Positive Visualisation CD has two tracks on it.  The first track gives you an opportunity to relax using previously taught progressive muscle relaxation.  It then gives you two opportunities to visualise a scene in which you want to perform successfully.

The second track is called Positive Scanning and it gives you an opportunity to look back on an event which you performed successfully by recalling as much as possible about the event, thereby reinforcing neural pathways, and therefore confidence and self esteem.
